Frequently asked questions
The questions singers, bands and podcast teams ask us most often before their first session, collected in one place. Anything missing? Write to us and you will hear back within 1 working day.
Booking
How do I book a session at Klangnest?
Use the form on our contact page or e-mail [email protected] with your preferred dates, the kind of recording and a rough number of tracks. Mario Wieser replies within 1 working day with a written quote and two or three available slots. Your date is confirmed once you accept the quote and the 30 % deposit has reached our account. During opening hours you can also call us on +43 1 890 46 27.
How far in advance should I book?
For vocal and podcast sessions, one to two weeks' notice is usually enough. Full-day band recordings are better planned three to four weeks ahead, because the live room is often booked for several consecutive days. Mixing and mastering jobs are taken on continuously; the clock starts once all files and the deposit have arrived.
When is the studio open?
Monday to Friday from 10:00 to 20:00 and Saturday from 11:00 to 18:00. We are closed on Sundays and Austrian public holidays. Sessions take place by appointment only; dropping in without one is not possible, as a recording is usually under way.
Is there a minimum age for bookings?
Yes, we only enter into contracts with people aged 18 or over. Younger singers are of course welcome when a parent or guardian makes the booking and is present throughout the session. The details are set out in our terms and conditions.
Can I hire the studio without an engineer?
No. Every session at Klangnest is run by a member of our team who knows the room, the console and the microphone collection. That protects the equipment and makes sure the recording ends up sounding the way we are prepared to stand behind. For mixing and mastering you are welcome to sit in on the approval in the control room.
What happens to the data in my enquiry?
We keep enquiries for 12 months so we can answer follow-up questions; invoices must be retained for 7 years under the Austrian Federal Fiscal Code. Our website uses no analytics tools and builds no profiles. Which service providers are involved when the form is sent, and what rights you have, is explained in our privacy policy.
Sessions in the studio
How do I get to the studio?
Klangnest is at Burggasse 95, 1070 Vienna, in the courtyard of a Gründerzeit building in Neubau. Take the U3 to Zieglergasse (exit Westbahnstraße) and walk about 8 minutes, or the U6 to Burggasse-Stadthalle and walk roughly 10 minutes along Burggasse towards the centre. Bus 48A stops at Kaiserstraße/Burggasse and Zieglergasse/Burggasse, 2 to 4 minutes on foot; tram 49 stops at Kaiserstraße (Westbahnstraße), about a 5-minute walk. From Westbahnhof it is about 15 minutes on foot. The building sits in the 7th district's short-term parking zone; a loading bay in front of the house for instruments and backline can be arranged on request. You will find the location on OpenStreetMap.
How many people can record at the same time?
Up to 8 musicians can play together in the 68 m² live room with its 4.2 m ceiling, with 32 preamp channels available. The 9 m² booth is intended for vocals, speech and single instruments. For podcasts, up to four people sit at the table; further guests join via an audio link.
What should I bring to the session?
Lyrics, reference tracks, backing tracks or project files – ideally shared by link beforehand – plus your instruments, backline, fresh strings and spare cables. The 1979 grand piano lives in the studio and is tuned before the session on request. You will find a complete checklist with a timeline in our guide Preparing your session.
What if I arrive late or lose my voice?
Booked time starts at the agreed hour, even if you arrive later. We extend at the end when the calendar allows and charge the additional time at the hourly rate. If you are hoarse or unwell, let us know as early as you can: rescheduling is free up to 5 working days before the date, after which the deadlines in article 5 of the terms apply.
Can I bring guests?
Yes, within reason. The 34 m² control room comfortably seats two or three people besides the engineer; anyone not recording stays there during takes rather than in the live room. Smoking is not permitted anywhere in the studio or the courtyard.
Files and delivery
When do I receive the raw files after a recording?
Within 2 working days of the session we provide every track as WAV files at the recording resolution via a download link – sorted by song and take, cleanly named and sharing a common start point. If you need something on the day itself, tell us before the session.
How long do mixing and mastering take?
As a rule of thumb we allow 7 working days per 5 tracks for mixing and 3 working days for mastering, each counted from the arrival of all files and the deposit. Revision rounds come on top. Binding delivery dates are stated in the quote. What exactly we need for mixing and mastering is described on the respective service pages.
In which format should I deliver files for mixing or mastering?
For mixing: consolidated individual tracks as WAV from bar 1, at the session sample rate, with no processing on the master bus, plus tempo, key and a rough mix for reference. For mastering: the stereo mix as a full-resolution WAV with no limiter on the bus and headroom to spare. The details are covered in our guide File formats and delivery.
Which formats do I get at the end?
For a mix we deliver the stereo mix as WAV at session resolution plus an MP3 for previewing; stems and instrumental or TV versions are available at €60 per track incl. 20 % VAT. For mastering you receive WAV masters for streaming and CD and, on request, a DDP image with embedded ISRC codes and a vinyl pre-master with the side split worked out.
How long do you keep my files?
Sessions, mixes and masters are archived for 12 months from completion of the job. During that time you can request a fresh copy at any point or have a mix reopened for an additional version. After that the data is deleted, so please keep your own downloads safe in two places.
Rights and release
Who owns the recording after the session?
You do. Once the job has been paid in full, all rights in the recordings and masters we have produced for you pass to you – without any limit in time or territory. Until then the files remain with us. The exact wording is in article 8 of the terms, and the background is explained in our guide Rights to your master.
May I release the recordings on streaming platforms?
Yes. As soon as the invoice is settled in full, you can use your masters on every platform, on physical formats, in film or in advertising. Bear in mind that rights in the composition and lyrics are a separate matter: for cover versions and samples you clear the licence yourself.
Do you credit Klangnest or use my music for your own purposes?
A credit along the lines of "Recorded at Klangnest, Vienna" is appreciated but never required. We only use your music or your name if you expressly allow it in writing. Without that permission your session stays confidential, including towards other clients.
What about AKM, LSG and ISRC codes?
Registering your works with collecting societies such as AKM or LSG is your responsibility as author or label; we are happy to explain how it works but do not register anything on your behalf. ISRC codes supplied by your label or aggregator are embedded in the masters and the DDP image during mastering.
Can I have the mix or master done at another studio?
Of course. You receive the complete raw files and can hand any further step to whomever you like. Acceptance of each service is governed by article 7 of the terms.
Payment and cancellation
How much is the deposit and when is it due?
When you accept the quote we issue a deposit invoice for 30 % based on the order value; your date is fixed once the amount has reached our account. The balance is invoiced after the session or after approval of the mix or master. All prices are in euros incl. 20 % VAT. The full payment terms are in article 6 of the terms.
How and by when do I pay the final invoice?
By bank transfer to our business account; the bank details are on every invoice. Private clients pay within 7 days, businesses with a valid VAT ID within 14 days of the invoice date. The legal basis for our invoicing is set out in the legal notice.
Can I cancel or reschedule free of charge?
Up to 5 working days before the date you can cancel or reschedule free of charge; we credit the deposit against the new date or refund it. For cancellations less than 48 hours before the session we charge 50 % as a cancellation fee. What applies between those two deadlines, and how we handle illness, is governed by article 5 of the terms.
What happens if the studio has to cancel?
If we have to cancel a date, for instance because of illness in the team or a technical fault, we offer you the next available replacement date. If that does not suit you, we refund the deposit in full. Further details are likewise set out in article 5 of the terms.
How many revision rounds are included in the price?
Mixing includes 2 revision rounds per track, mastering 1 round. Additional rounds or changes to the underlying material – newly recorded parts, say – are charged by the hour, and we tell you the cost before we start. See article 7 of the terms and our services page.
