In the Burggasse courtyard since 2016

Klangnest began in 2016, when Lukas Steinbauer, after ten years as a live and studio engineer, went looking for a place where bands could once again play together in one room instead of standing in a booth one track at a time. He found it in the courtyard of a Gründerzeit building at Burggasse 95, in the heart of Neubau, Vienna's 7th district. The former workshop wing had what a live room needs: high ceilings, thick brick walls and no neighbours overhead.

The conversion took most of that first year. Theresa Hofbauer joined in 2018 as mix and mastering engineer, and Mario Wieser coordinates bookings, quotes and invoices and looks after podcast and voice sessions. We have stayed a team of three ever since – large enough to offer recording, mixing and mastering under one roof, small enough that you always know who is working on your project.

Rooms and acoustics

The studio covers 240 m² on a single level. At its heart is the 68 m² live room with a 4.2 m ceiling, where up to eight musicians can play at once. The room rests on a floating floor that decouples it from the rest of the building, and it is treated with absorbers, diffusers and adjustable wall panels so that a drum kit sounds open and a string quartet sounds calm – without deadening the space.

Control Room 1 measures 34 m² and is laid out symmetrically, with a controlled decay that makes mixing and mastering decisions dependable. The 9 m² booth has a sightline to the control room and is intended for vocals, rap, voice-over and single instruments. A lounge with a kitchen and a store for instruments and cases complete the floor plan.

Equipment

Recording runs through a 32-channel analogue console whose preamps stay warm and quiet even when every channel is in use at once. It feeds a hybrid setup: signals pass through high-quality converters into the DAW, where editing, comping and automation happen, while outboard compressors and equalisers are on hand for bus and individual processing – used deliberately and sparingly.

The microphone collection comprises 24 microphones: large-diaphragm condensers for vocals and speech, small-diaphragm pairs for acoustic instruments and overheads, ribbon microphones for brass, guitar amplifiers and room sound, and sturdy dynamic microphones for drums and loud sources. The live room houses a grand piano built in 1979, which is serviced regularly and tuned before sessions on request. You will find the individual offers on our services page.

How we work

Our prices are published openly on the website, always gross incl. 20 % VAT, and every project starts with a written quote you can look over at your own pace. One engineer runs a session from start to finish – no handovers between shifts, no assistant you have never met. After mixing and mastering we hold an approval call in which we listen to the version together and gather your notes before the revision round begins.

All sessions, mixes and masters are archived for 12 months after a job is completed, so you can ask for a copy or an alternate version at any time during that period. What you should know before a recording is summarised in our guides. For everything else, get in touch – we reply within 1 working day.
